This gold medal along with its silver issue is designed by the famous French sculptor, medallist and coin engraver Henri-August Patey. It was presented to Muzaffar al-Din Shah and the high-ranking officials travelling with him during his visit to Paris that year.

Together with the silver medal (lot 1159), they form the only known pair in the original box.
