There were just three pieces struck of this trial sixpence in gold, each with its coinage number hand-etched into the reverse. Though there were only three pieces struck, it is interesting to note that all three were rendered on non-uniform flans. Wilson & Rasmussen provide the weights of each of the examples: #1 weighs 2.89 grams, #2 weighs 3.05 grams, and #3 weighs 3.98 grams. This variance of weights further indicates that this was a trial striking. While the #1 weighs roughly the same as a regular issue sixpence, it is curious that the mint workers decided on the need to strike heavier examples.
At Heritage auctions in 2015, a specimen with the incised number 3 (Auction 3037, New York, January 2015, lot 31181) and with the value number I (Auction 3041, August 2015, lot 32255) were sold. Our piece also bears the value numeral 1 and also has the low weight of 2.88 g for this number, as described by WR. As it is clearly not the specimen from the Heritage auction, it is reasonable to assume that more than the 3 specimens described so far were minted.
