Charles II (29 May 1630 - 6 February 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651 and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685.
He was the eldest surviving child of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and Henrietta Maria of France. After Charles I's execution at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War, the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II king on 5 February 1649.

The Stuart Restoration was the reinstatement of the Stuart monarchy in England, Scotland, and Ireland in May 1660. It replaced the Commonwealth of England.

Charles II's coronation as Kind of England took place on 23 April 1661.

This medal was struck for the distribution among the spectators of that 'splendid ceremony'. The engraver Thomas Simon charged £110 for its execution. Good specimens are frequently to be met with but very rarely in a perfect state of preservation.

In the work ‘Medallic Illustrations’, this medal is only described as an ‘electrotype’. The piece has not been published as a cast medal and is extremely rare.

Despite suspicions about Charles II's links to their Orangist opponents, Grand pensionary Johan de Witt viewed the 1660 Stuart Restoration as an opportunity to rebuild relationships. He hoped to negotiate overlapping defensive agreements with England and France to ensure peace, and continued Dutch economic dominance. However, the English saw little benefit in preserving this system, and wanted concessions the Dutch were not prepared to grant. When merchants in the City of London demanded increased Protectionism, Charles II renewed the Navigation Acts in August 1660 which led to further disputes with the Dutch Republic.

The Battle of Lowestoft, fought on 13 June 1665, was a significant naval engagement during the Second Anglo-Dutch War (1665 - 1667). It was the first major battle of the war and resulted in a decisive victory for the English fleet, commanded by James, Duke of York, over the Dutch. The battle highlighted the importance of naval power in European conflicts and set the stage for future Anglo-Dutch rivalries.

This medal was struck as an honorary reward for those who had distinguished themselves in action and was to be awarded to officers of the rank of captain and above. These medals are deliberately without a date or special design so that they can be used on any occasion 'for all such undertakings'.

It was a series of treaties between England, the Dutch Republic, France, and Denmark-Norway. The negotiations took place in the Dutch city of Breda, and the settlement reflected the complex political and military realities of the time.

The territorial exchanges, particularly the English retention of New Netherland (including modern day New York) and the Dutch retention of Suriname, had long-term implications for colonial development in the Americas.

This medal was crafted by Christopher Adolfszoon, the same artist who cut the dies for the medal described in MI i 528/176. For both, he has committed the same mistake of placing Scotland in the first and fourth quarters of the British shield.

This medal does not mention Breda or give any specific date beyond the year. It probably alludes not only to the treaty of peace but also to those amicable relations between the two countries which the French invasion of the Spanish Netherlands made urgent and which were cemented afterwards by a treaty arranged and concluded in five days by De Witt and Sir William Temple.

The couple was married on 21 May 1662. Catherine got pregnant and miscarried at least three times. Her position was a difficult one, and though Charles continued to have children with his many mistresses, he insisted that she'd be treated with respect, and sided with her against his mistresses when he felt that she was not receiving due respect. After her three miscarriages, it seemed to be more and more unlikely that the queen would bear an heir. Royal advisors urged the monarch to seek a divorce, hoping that the new wife would be Protestant and fertile - but Charles always refused.

The installation of the King of Sweden did not take place before the 29 May 1671, and to commemorate this ceremony his Majesty ordered these medals to be struck in gold and silver. The gold issues were bestowed upon the Knights companions present and other persons of quality. Those in silver were distributed among some of the officers attending the installation and others. Great Britain made its first tentative efforts to establish overseas settlements in the 16th century. Maritime expansion, driven by commercial ambitions and by competition with France, accelerated in the 17th century and resulted in the establishment of settlements in North America and the West Indies.

By 1670 there were British American colonies in New England, Virginia, and Maryland and settlements in the Bermudas, Honduras, Antigua, Barbados, and Nova Scotia. Jamaica was obtained by conquest in 1655, and the Hudson Bay Company established itself in what became northwestern Canada from the 1670s on. The East India Company began establishing trading posts in India in 1600, and the Straits Settlements (Penang, Singapore, Malacca, and Labuan) became British through an extension of that company’s activities. The first permanent British settlement on the African continent was founded at James Island in the Gambia River in 1661.
