Zeitgenössischer überarbeiteter Guss / Contemporary tooled cast.

Oliver Cromwell (25 April 1599 - 3 September 1658) was an English statesman, politician, and soldier, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in British history. He came to prominence during the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, initially as a senior commander in the Parliamentarian army and latterly as a politician. A leading advocate of the execution of Charles I in January 1649, which led to the establishment of the Commonwealth of England, he ruled as Lord Protector from December 1653 until his death. He died at age 59 at Whitehall on 3 September 1658, the anniversary of his great victories at Dunbar and Worcester.

This medal was executed by Cromwell's order. The reverse die was, after a short use, broken across the middle which may account for the rarity of the medal. The portrait was copied from a miniature by Cooper, now in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire.

This event was a significant moment in the history of the British Isles, as it marked Charles II's formal accession to the Scottish throne during a period of intense political and military conflict. The coronation was part of the broader struggle between the Royalists and the Commonwealth forces led by Oliver Cromwell, following the execution of Charles I in 1649.

The treaty is otherwise notable because it is one of the first treaties implementing international arbitration as a method of conflict resolution in early modern times. A secret clause, obliging the States of Holland to enact the Act of Seclusion, played an important part in Dutch internal politics during the First Stadtholderless Period.

This medal represents, as the exergue intimates, a symbolical view of Britain after the Restoration when Fortitude, Wisdom, Peace, Commerce, Prudence and Plenty are all supposed to be united in making their offerings at the national altar. The legend perhaps intimates more than it expresses thus even Prudence, although she is placed somewhat in the background, is still present. The dies of this medal are kept in the British Museum.

Charles II (29 May 1630 - 6 February 1685) was King of Scotland from 1649 until 1651 and King of England, Scotland, and Ireland from the 1660 Restoration of the monarchy until his death in 1685.
He was the eldest surviving child of Charles I of England, Scotland and Ireland and Henrietta Maria of France. After Charles I's execution at Whitehall on 30 January 1649, at the climax of the English Civil War, the Parliament of Scotland proclaimed Charles II king on 5 February 1649.

The Stuart Restoration was the reinstatement of the Stuart monarchy in England, Scotland, and Ireland in May 1660. It replaced the Commonwealth of England.

Charles II's coronation as King of England took place on 23 April 1661.

This medal was struck for the distribution among the spectators of that 'splendid ceremony'. The engraver Thomas Simon charged £110 for its execution. Good specimens are frequently to be met with but very rarely in a perfect state of preservation.
