Victoria (24 May 1819 - 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death in 1901.

Her reign of 63 years and 216 days - which was longer than those of any of her predecessors - constituted the Victorian era. It was a period of industrial, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. In 1876, the British parliament voted to grant her the additional title of Empress of India.

Winchester College was founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham. He was a former Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor to both Edward III and Richard II. He decided to found the school in response to the lack of trained priests after the Black Death. Winchester was to operate as a feeder or Latin grammar school to New College, also founded by Wykeham.

Richard Gregory donated this gold medal weighing 10 guineas in November 1838 in memory of his first wife Isabella. It was to be awarded annually to pupils of the Harrow School in north-west London, a school steeped in tradition, for the composition of Latin prose. Gregory also endowed scholarships for Harrow pupils to study Latin at Cambridge and Oxford. The school's most famous pupil was Winston Churchill.

Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1 May 1769 - 14 September 1852) was an Anglo-Irish army officer and statesman who was one of the leading military and political figures in Britain during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, twice serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He is among the commanders who ended the Anglo-Mysore Wars when Tipu Sultan was killed in the fourth war in 1799, and among those who ended the Napoleonic Wars in a victory when the Seventh Coalition defeated Napoleon at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815.

The Cinque Ports are a group of towns situated in Sussex and Kent. They comprise Hastings, Romney, Hythe, Dover, Sandwich, Winchelsea and Rye. In mediaeval times, there was no standing navy in Britain and the King relied on other bodies such as the sea-board towns to supply an agreed quota of ships in times of necessity.

By a charter of Edward I, the Cinque Ports were granted certain privileges in the matter of civil and criminal jurisdiction within their boundaries and exemption from all taxes, aids and tollages. In return for these and other concessions, the ports were required to supply the King, upon request, with fifty-seven ships for fifteen days each year. The officer commanding these ships was the Warden. The charters of the Cinque Ports were surrendered to the crown in 1685 and most of their privileges and obligations were abolished by the Reform Act of 1832 and the Municipal Corporations Act of 1835.

The Corn Laws were tariffs and other trade restrictions on imported food and corn enforced in the United Kingdom between 1815 and 1846. The word "corn" in British English denoted all cereal grains, including wheat, oats and barley. The laws were designed to keep corn prices high to favour domestic farmers, and represented British mercantilism.

The Corn Laws blocked the import of cheap corn, initially by simply forbidding importation below a set price, and later by imposing steep import duties, making it too expensive to import it from abroad, even when food supplies were short.

The first two years of the Great Famine in Ireland of 1845 - 1852 forced a resolution because of the urgent need for new food supplies. The Prime Minister, Sir Robert Peel, a Conservative, achieved repeal in 1846 with the support of the Whigs in Parliament, overcoming the opposition of most of his own party.

Founded in 1209, the University of Cambridge is one of the world's oldest universities and leading academic centres, and a self-governed community of scholars. The Chancellor's Gold Medal is an annual award for poetry open to undergraduates at the University of Cambridge, paralleling Oxford University's Newdigate Prize. It was first presented by Prince William Frederick, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh during his time as Chancellor of the University of Cambridge.

The recipient, James Gow (1854-1923), was an English scholar, educator, historian, and author, widely recognized for his work "A Short History of Greek Mathematics". Following an education at King's College School, he received his Master of Arts degree at Trinity College, Cambridge. Gow was a third Classic and Chancellor's Classical medalist in 1875 at Cambridge, and became a Fellow of Trinity College and of King's College, London in 1876.

The First Opium War (1839 - 1842) was a conflict between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, and China (under the Qing Dynasty) that arose from disputes over trade, diplomacy, and the opium trade. It marked the beginning of a period of Western imperialism in China and had profound consequences for Chinese sovereignty and global trade. Among other things, China had to cede the island of Hong Kong to the United Kingdom, which became a British colony and a key trading port, and pay 21 million silver dollars in reparations to the United Kingdom.

John Charles Herries (1778-1835) and William Ewart Gladstone (1809 - 1898) both held office as Master of the Mint. The refining method referred to is the sulphuric acid process which was established in France in 1802. Mathieson, a melter at the Royal Mint, obtained knowledge of the process and Herries, the then Master of the Mint, allowed him to experiment in a private capacity whilst reserving an option for the government should the experiments be successful.

Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (26 August 1819 - 14 December 1861) was the husband of Queen Victoria. As such, he was consort of the British monarch from their marriage on 10 February 1840 until his death in 1861. Victoria granted him the title Prince Consort in 1857.

This piece occurs on thick (5 mm) and thin (4 mm) flans and was commissioned by Prince Albert who sat for the modelling of the portrait. The drawing of the horse was taken from Prince Albert's favourite horse "Imann"'.

There exists an example of this medal struck in gold which bears the edge inscription in engraved capitals CHARLES WENT-WORTH DILKE ESQ. The inscription refers to Sir Charles Wentworth Dilke, 1st Baronet (18 February 1810 - 10 May 1869), who was an English art patron, horticulturalist and Whig politician.

This piece is one of eleven examples which were intended to be given by Prince Albert to those who had helped him in the organisation of the Great Exhibition.

The Royal Archives contain the file copy of Prince Albert's letter in his own hand to Dilke (RA F25/27) in which he writes 'My dear Sir, Now that the Exhibition has closed its happy career allow me to express to you, as one of those who stood by its cradle, helped in its education and served it truly and zealously after it had been brought to maturity my sense of the assiduity and ability with which you have discharged the various duties entrusted to you. It was my intention as a remembrance of our personal connexion in this work to have presented you this day with a medal, I hope still to do so, though disappointed for the moment by the illness of Mr. Wyon which has prevented its being completed. I could not however delay my acknowledgements beyond today. Believe me always, yours truly, A.W.C.15/10/51".

The Smithfield Show, formerly the Smithfield Club Cattle Show and later the Royal Smithfield Show, was an annual British agricultural show, organised by the Royal Smithfield Club. It was founded in 1799 and was first held at Wootton's Livery Stables in Dolphin Yard, Smithfield, London. From 1862 until 1938 it was held at the Agricultural Hall in Islington, London. From 1949, it was held at the Earl's Court Exhibition Centre in Earl's Court, London.

The last show was held in 2004, and it was the last major livestock show in London.

Charterhouse is a public school (English independent boarding school for pupils aged 13 - 18) in Godalming, Surrey, England. Founded by Thomas Sutton in 1611 on the site of the old Carthusian monastery in Charterhouse Square, Smithfield, London, it educates over thousand pupils. Charterhouse is one of the original nine English public schools reported upon by the Clarendon Commission in 1864 leading to its regulation by the Public Schools Act 1868.

The engraved name is perhaps the same H. W. Sotheby who, in 1861, published The Life and Writings of Thomas de Quincey.

Queen Victoria, the British monarch from 1837 to 1901, and Prince Albert (her husband from 1840 until his death in 1861) had nine children, fourty-two grandchildren, and eighty-seven great-grandchildren. Victoria was called the "grandmother of Europe" due to the prolific web of marriages between her children and the other Great Powers of Europe.

By the time these medals were struck, Prince Leopold and Princess Beatrice had not been born yet.

Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I of England, who issued a royal charter on the advice of the former Archbishop of Armagh and Lord Chancellor of Ireland, Adam Loftus, it was modelled after the collegiate universities of both Oxford and Cambridge, with whom it shares a unique relationship. It is one of the "seven ancient universities" of Great Britain and Ireland, and has significantly influenced Irish literature, law, medicine and science.

This medal was awarded to William Henry Stanley Monck (21 April 1839 - 24 June 1915) who was an Irish astronomer and philosopher. In 1878, he was appointed as Professor of Moral Philosophy and remained in that position until 1892. On 28 August 1892, he became the first person to measure starlight electrically. For many years Monck served as Chief Registrar for the Bankruptcy Division of the High Court of Ireland. He wrote several works about logic, metaphysics, and astronomy, and was the author of a collection of articles in Popular Astronomy. He was also a founding member of the British Astronomical Association, on whose body he served.
