Sir William Browne (1692-1774) was elected president of the Royal College of Physicians in 1765. The Browne Medals (also known as the Sir William Browne's Medals) are gold medals which since his death in 1774 have been awarded for annual undergraduate competitions in Latin and Greek poetry at the University of Cambridge.

Sir William Browne (1692-1774) was elected president of the Royal College of Physicians in 1765. The Browne Medals (also known as the Sir William Browne's Medals) are gold medals which since his death in 1774 have been awarded for annual undergraduate competitions in Latin and Greek poetry at the University of Cambridge.

The recipient, Sir Frederick Pollock, 3rd Baronet, PC (1845–1937), academic, retained his connection with Trinity College being elected Fellow in 1868 (Honourable Fellow, 1920). In 1871 he was admitted to the Bar and went on to write a series of books on the teaching of English Law. He was admitted to the Privy Council in 1911.

In 1857 the university decided that the prizes for Greek and Latin epigrams should be split and two smaller medals awarded. This was given Royal Approval in April 1858.

Only ten of these smaller medals were ever awarded (to nine recipients) as winners of both the Greek and Latin medals continued to receive the large medal. Of these ten small medal awards Pagan knew of only one survivor, oddly also for 1866, the award for a Greek epigram to a Thomas Moss. Awards of the smaller medal ceased in 1866. It is worth noting that the medal is indeed about half the weight of the earlier (and later) large-sized medal.

Alnwick Castle is a castle and country house in Alnwick in the English county of Northumberland. It is the seat of the 12th Duke of Northumberland, built following the Norman conquest and renovated and remodelled a number of times. It is a Grade I listed building now the home of Ralph Percy, 12th Duke of Northumberland and his family. In 2016, the castle received over 600,000 visitors per year when combined with adjacent attraction the Alnwick Garden.

Elizabeth Seymour and Hugh Smithson Percy were elevated to 1st Duke and Duchess of Northumberland in 1766 by George III, whose restorations at Windsor Castle were partly inspired by the couple's work at Alnwick.

The obverse of the medal had been used on the medal of his predecessor (BHM 112), the Duke of Grafton (1735-1811), who was Chancellor from 1768. This later piece was struck under his successor c. 1811 and utilizing an updated reverse design.

The recipient, Thomas (Tom) Steele, engineer and political activist, was born on 3 November 1788, at Derrymore, County Clare, the son of William Steele, gentleman, and Catherine Steele (née Bridgeman). In July 1805, Steele enters Trinity College Dublin, graduating BA in the spring of 1810.

The Royal Academy of Arts (RA) is an art institution based in Burlington House in Piccadilly in London. Founded in 1768 under the patronage of King George III, it has a unique position as an independent, privately funded institution led by eminent artists and architects. Its purpose is to promote the creation, enjoyment and appreciation of the fine arts through exhibitions, education and debate.

The recipient, Francis Edwards (1784–1857), was a British architect of the Georgian and early Victorian periods, who worked extensively in the London area. Sir John Soane's foremost pupil, Edwards joined Soane's office at Lincoln's Inn Fields as an improver in 1806 and was admitted to the Royal Academy Schools two years later.

Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg (30 November 1719 - 8 February 1772) was Princess of Wales by marriage to Frederick, Prince of Wales, eldest son and heir apparent of King George II. She never became queen consort, as Frederick predeceased his father in 1751. Augusta's eldest son succeeded her father-in-law as George III in 1760. After her spouse died, Augusta was the presumptive regent of Great Britain in the event of a regency, until her son reached majority in 1756. Augusta died of throat cancer at the age of 52 at Carlton House, and was buried seven days later at Westminster Abbey.

The First Carib War (1769 - 1773) was a military conflict between the Carib inhabitants of Saint Vincent and British military forces supporting British efforts at colonial expansion on the island. With military matters reaching a stalemate, a peace agreement was signed in 1773 that delineated boundaries between British and Carib areas.

This is a privately issued medal and some of the silver specimens have ring mounts presumably intended to facilitate them being worn by the recipient.

John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl, (6 May 1729 - 5 November 1774), known as John Murray until 1764, was a Scottish peer and Tory politician. Atholl died in November 1774, aged 45, after drowning himself in the River Tay in a fit of delirium and was buried at Dunkeld. His eldest son John succeeded him in the dukedom.

The Gregorians were a fraternal organisation that grew up in parallel with Freemasonry in the 18th century. They were depicted by Hogarth as 'the Merry Gregs'. However, they were the victims of the Unlawful Oaths Act of 1797, introduced by a Government in fear of revolutionary groups that might overthrow the monarchy.

This act, and the unlawful Societies Act of 1799, outlawed societies that administered oaths. It also outlawed any organisations that held closed meetings and were organised into branches with national committees. The well-connected Freemasons managed to get exemption but the Gregorians who subscribed £80 17s towards 'the support of Government' in 1798, had no such luck and by the early 19th century they were no longer meeting.

The Great Siege of Gibraltar was an unsuccessful attempt by Spain and France to capture Gibraltar from the British during the American Revolutionary War. It was the largest battle in the war by number of combatants. The British forces were led by George Eliott, Roger Curtis and August de la Motte. The siege was lifted on 7 February 1783 and resulted in a decisive victory for the British. It was a factor in ending the American Revolutionary War - the Peace of Paris negotiations were reliant on news from the siege.

Struck in honour of the Hanoverian Brigade.

The University of Göttingen, officially the Georg August University of Göttingen, is a public research university in the city of Göttingen, Lower Saxony, Germany. Founded in 1734 by George II, King of Great Britain and Elector of Hanover, it began instruction in 1737 and is officially recognized as the oldest university in Lower Saxony.

Charles Edward Louis John Sylvester Maria Casimir Stuart (31 December 1720 - 30 January 1788) was the elder son of James Francis Edward Stuart, making him the grandson of James VII and II, and the Stuart claimant to the thrones of England, Scotland, and Ireland from 1766 as Charles III. During his lifetime, he was also known as "the Young Pretender" and "the Young Chevalier"; in popular memory, he is known as "Bonnie Prince Charlie". Charles died in Rome of a stroke on 30 January 1788, aged 67.

George, Prince of Wales (12 August 1762 - 26 June 1830), later King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and King of Hanover from 29 January 1820 until his death in 1830, was acting as prince regent for his father, George III, since 5 February 1811 during his father's final mental illness.

The actual occasion for this medal is unclear. The reverse illustrates the story of King Alfred and St. Cuthbert.

Sultan Tippoo (also Tipu Sultan; 1 December 1751 - 4 May 1799) commonly referred to as Sher-e-Mysore or "Tiger of Mysore", was a ruler of the Kingdom of Mysore based in South India. He was a pioneer of rocket artillery, expanded the iron-cased Mysorean rockets and commissioned the military manual Fathul Mujahidin.

The economy of Mysore reached a zenith during his reign. He deployed rockets against advances of British forces and their allies during the Anglo-Mysore Wars, including the Battle of Pollilur and Siege of Srirangapatna. On 18 March 1792, Tipu agreed to the terms and signed the Treaty of Seringapatam, ending hostilities in the Third Anglo-Mysore War.

Thomas Erskine, 1st Baron Erskine (10 January 1750 - 17 November 1823) was a British Whig lawyer and politician. He served as Lord High Chancellor of Great Britain between 1806 and 1807 in the Ministry of All the Talents.

Sir Vicary Gibbs (27 October 1751 - 8 February 1820) was an English judge and politician. He was known for his caustic wit, which won for him the sobriquet of "Vinegar Gibbs".

In 1794, William Pitt's government, fearful of a revolution, decided to take action against people who were campaigning for parliamentary reform. Habeas corpus was suspended and twelve members of radical societies were imprisoned and charged with a variety of offences amounting to high treason. Erskine and Gibbs were assigned as counsel to seven of them. After eight days of evidence and speeches, including Erskine's seven-hour speech on the final day, and several hours deliberation, the jury returned a verdict of not guilty. Erskine was hailed as a hero by the crowds outside who unharnessed his horses (which he never saw again) and pulled his carriage through the streets.

Admiral of the Fleet Richard Howe, 1st Earl Howe (8 March 1726 - 5 August 1799) was a Royal Navy officer and politician. After serving in the War of the Austrian Succession, he gained a reputation for his role in amphibious operations against the French coast as part of Britain's policy of naval descents during the Seven Years' War. He also took part, as a naval captain, in the decisive British naval victory at the Battle of Quiberon Bay in November 1759.

In command of a British fleet of twenty-two ships he defeated a fleet of twenty-five French ships, which had been escorting a grain convoy, capturing seven of the enemy ships, at the Glorious First of June 1794.
