Die grossen Goldvorräte - der erste Goldfund fand im Jahr 1886 in der Gauteng-Provinz nahe Johannesburg statt - gaben dem Präsidenten der ZAR (South African Republic) Paul Krüger die finanziellen Möglichkeiten, eigene Goldmünzen zu prägen. So erteilte der Volksrat die Konzession mit Hilfe eines Konsortiums aus niederländischen, deutschen und britischen Investoren, die südafrikanische Nationalbank im Jahr 1890 zu gründen, die auch eine Münzstätte betreiben sollte. Es wurde auch festgelegt, dass sich die Münzen in der Grösse und Nennwert an der britischen Währung orientieren sollten. Um die ersten Münzen noch vor der anstehenden Präsidentenwahl in Umlauf bringen zu können und weil Südafrika noch über keine eigene Münzstätte verfügte, liess man die erste Stücke in der Münze Berlin prägen. Die staatliche Münzanstalt und die Notenbank wurden in Pretoria im nordwestlichen Stadtteil Church Square errichtet und offiziell am 6. Juli 1892 eröffnet.
