James Francis Edward Stuart (10 June 1688 - 1 January 1766) was the House of Stuart claimant to the thrones of England, Ireland and Scotland from 1701 until his death in 1766. The only son of James II of England and his second wife, Mary of Modena, he was Prince of Wales and heir until his Catholic father was deposed and exiled in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. His Protestant half-sister Mary II and her husband William III became co-monarchs. As a Catholic, he was subsequently excluded from the succession by the Act of Settlement 1701.

James attempted an invasion, trying to land at the Firth of Forth on 23 March 1708 which failed. After the accession of George I, James attempted another restoration in the winter 1715/16, but this one failed as well.

The Treaty of Passarowitz was the peace treaty signed in Pozarevac, a town that was in the Ottoman Empire but is now in Serbia, on 21 July 1718 between the Ottoman Empire and its adversaries, the Habsburg monarchy and the Republic of Venice. Peace was arranged with the intervention and mediation of Great Britain and the Dutch Republic.

On the reverse the King is pointing to the Morea, the origin of the quarrel, which was now allowed to be retained by the Ottomans.

The Naval Action off Cape Passaro (also known as the Battle of Cape Passaro) took place on 11 August 1718 during the War of the Quadruple Alliance (1718 - 1720). It was a significant naval engagement between the British Royal Navy and the Spanish fleet. The battle occurred off the coast of Cape Passaro in south-eastern Sicily and resulted in a decisive victory for the British. The engagement underscored the decline of Spain as a major naval power and the rise of Britain as the dominant maritime force in Europe.

Maria Clementina Sobieska (18 July 1702 - 18 January 1735) was a titular Queen of England, Scotland and Ireland by marriage to James Francis Edward Stuart, a Jacobite claimant to the British throne. She was also the granddaughter of the Polish King John III Sobieski.

George I of Great Britain was opposed to the marriage because he feared that the union might produce heirs to James Francis Edward's claim to his thrones. To placate him, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor (and Maria Clementina's own maternal first cousin) had her arrested while on her way to Italy to marry James Francis Edward. She was confined in Innsbruck Castle but managed to escape to Bologna, where, for safety from further intrusions, she was married by proxy to James, who was in Spain at that time.

Maria Clementina Sobieska (18 July 1702 - 18 January 1735) was a titular queen of England, Scotland and Ireland by marriage to James Francis Edward Stuart, a Jacobite claimant to the British throne. This medal was struck at about the time of the marriage. The proceedings of the Stuart family and their partisans were frequently secret and mysterious. The letters "et. c." in the legend on the reverse were consequently supposed to have some mysterious meaning, and various interpretations were proposed of these letters. The common &c. ("et cetera") was too obvious and simple a solution for those who were desirous of discovering some latent signification.

The Atterbury Plot was a conspiracy led by Francis Atterbury, Bishop of Rochester and Dean of Westminster, aimed at the restoration of the House of Stuart to the throne of Great Britain. It came some years after the unsuccessful Jacobite risings of 1715 and of 1719, at a time when the Whig government of the new Hanoverian king was deeply unpopular. The 1721 plot failed due to insufficient financial and military support.

This medal was executed when great exertions were being made secretly to raise troops and to supply arms to insurgents in Britain in order that another effort might be made to replace the Stuarts upon the throne. It was intended for distribution among the Jacobites. The mysterious suppression of the Prince's name increased the interest of his cause, and the treatment of the British supporters, deemed by the party to be the symbols of the Stuarts only, was calculated to fan the flame of indignation against the House of Hanover.

After the coronation of Charles II, the Order of the Bath fell into neglect till the year 1725, when George I revived it, enacting a new book of Statutes, and augmenting its decorations. Prince William, afterwards Duke of Cumberland, the second son, or the other Hope of the country, then four years of age, was the first Knight of the revived Order. The name derives from an elaborate medieval ceremony for preparing a candidate to receive his knighthood, of which ritual bathing (as a symbol of purification) was an element.

The siege of Gibraltar of 1727 (thirteenth siege of Gibraltar, second by Spain) saw Spanish forces besiege the British garrison of Gibraltar as part of the Anglo-Spanish War. After a five-month siege with several unsuccessful and costly assaults, Spanish troops gave up and withdrew. Following the failure, the war drew to a close, opening the way for the 1728 Treaty of El Pardo and the Treaty of Sevilla signed in 1729.

Sir Isaac Newton (25 December 1642 - 20 March 1727) was an English polymath active as a mathematician, physicist, astronomer, alchemist, theologian, and author. Newton was a key figure in the Scientific Revolution and the Enlightenment that followed. He was knighted by Queen Anne in 1705 and spent the last three decades of his life in London, serving as Warden (1696 - 1699) and Master (1699 - 1727) of the Royal Mint, in which he increased the accuracy and security of British coinage, as well as president of the Royal Society (1703 - 1727).

The legend on the reverse alludes to Newton's sagacity in penetrating the primary causes which governed the motion of the planets, and the device to his elucidation of the solar system.

This is the official medal distributed at the public expense during the ceremony. It is said that 200 were struck in gold, 800 in silver, and an even greater number in copper.
