Built in memory of Russia's victories, notably in the Russo-Turkish War of 1828, the arch was designed by Vasily Stasov. City leaders originally planned to place it by Obvodny Canal, but as the city limits expanded further south, the site was moved to the intersection of the Moscow Road and the Ligovsky Canal. Its new location, created the added benefit of making the Triumphal Arch an impressive gateway to the capital.

25 Roubles - 2 1/2 Imperials 1908, St. Petersburg Mint. 32.18 g. Probably on his 40th birthday. Bitkin 314 (R3). Fr. 171. Extremely rare, officially only 175 pieces struck. NGC UNC Details. Attractive specimen. Small edge nick and minor scratches on reverse.

In 1908, Emperor Nicholas II turned 40 years old. For gifts on the occasion of this anniversary, it was decided to mint a gold donative coin, similar to the 25 roubles 1896 "Coronation" coin, which was issued in 1896 in honor of the coronation of Nicholas II in Moscow. The first 150 coins were made from a gold nugget, weighing almost 5 kilograms, found in Siberian mines belonging to the Cabinet of His Majesty. In 1910, by order of the Grand Duke and Grand Numismatist Georgy Mikhailovich, another 25 coins were minted, so the total circulation was 175 copies. The weight of the coin of 32.26 grams and the denomination by that time no longer corresponded to the changed monetary standard adopted for gold coins as per the monetary reform of 1897, which indicates a donative purpose of the coin. As a means of payment, the coins were not used, but were kept in the Czar Family and the families of the nobles who received these coins as a sign of merit to the emperor. Today, the coin of 25 rubles of 1908 is one of the most expensive and rare coins of the time of Emperor Nicholas II.

The Russo-Persian War of 1826–1828 was the last major military conflict between the Russian Empire and Persia.
The war ended in 1828 following the occupation of Tabriz. The war had even more disastrous results for Persia than the 1804–1813 war, as the ensuing Treaty of Turkmenchay stripped Persia of its last remaining territories in the Caucasus, which comprised all of modern Armenia, the southern remainder of modern Azerbaijan, and modern Igdir in Turkey. Through the Gulistan and Turkmenchay treaties Persia lost all of its territories in the Caucasus to Russia. These territories had once extended throughout most of Transcaucasia and part of the North Caucasus.

During the Russian-Swedish War of 1788-1790, 5 Kopecks coins were minted at the Swedish mint and served as payment for Russian workers in the border regions. There were 5 Kopecks coins minted in 1788 with the dates 1764, 1778, and 1787. Sweden claimed that these were coins captured from Russian ships and not "counterfeit money". This war coinage is one of the most interesting phenomena in monetary history and one of the most popular rarities in Russian and Swedish numismatics.

This rouble belongs to the group of the rarest roubles of Peter I, the so-called "in a circle" type. This piece was struck on a broad (trial?) planchet. Its details surpass the other two known "in a circle"-roubles, one in the collections of Hermitage and the other one in the State Historical Museum in Moscow. The latter piece was struck on a smaller planchet practically without the circle-details.
This excessively rare rouble possibly represents a transitional type from the trial roubles minted in a ring abroad, allegedly in Nuremberg and the regular striking. Our specimen is struck with fresher dies than the two other known roubles. This fact, together with the broad planchet allows us to think with even more confidence about the possibility of being a pattern coin.

The Giray Khans were descendants of Chingiz Khan and rulers of the Crimean Khanate from 1441 to 1783. Established by Haci I Giray, it was the longest-lived of the Turkic khanates that succeeded the Golden Horde. The Khanate was also known as Qirim Hanligi, Qirim Yurtu, Great Horde and Desht-i Kipchak, and in old European historiography and geography as Little Tartary or Tartaria Minor. It lasted until April 8, 1783, when Catherine II of Russia annexed the whole Crimean Peninsula as the Taurida Governorate.

During the Seven Years' War, Russia occupied East Prussia (1758-1762) - nowadays partly belonging to Poland. During that time, coins were struck with the portrait of Tsarina Elisabeth I on the obverse and the well-known Prussian eagle and German denomination on the reverse. Her successor Peter III, a 'private Frederick enthusiast', withdrew from the war and returned the territory to King Frederick in 1762 (Peace of St. Petersburg.

The Battle of Gangut took place on 27 July 1714 during the Great Northern War (1700–1721), in the waters of Riilahti Bay, north of the Hanko Peninsula, near the site of the modern-day city of Hanko, Finland, between the Swedish Navy and Imperial Russian Navy. It was the first important victory of the Russian fleet in its history. It is commemorated in Russia as one of the Days of Military Honour.

On July 16, 1770, a small army of 17,000 Russian troops under Pjotr Rumjanzev defeated the Ottoman Army of 150,000 men under the command of the Grand Wesir outside of the town of Kagul in Moldavia. A remarkable feat that fetched Rumjanzev the rank of field marshal and an estate with 5000 serfs. Regretfully, it also brought him the envy of his fellow generals who tried to block his future career whenever possible.

Frederick the Great of Prussia sent Rumjanzev a letter with his congratulations. He compared the victory of the small Russian army over the far, far greater Turkish army with the victories of the ancient Romans.

With the Capitulation of Estonia and Livonia in 1710 the Swedish dominions Estonia and Livonia were integrated into the Russian Empire following their conquest during the Great Northern War. The Livonian nobility and the city of Riga capitulated on 15 July 1710 , Pernau (Pärnu) in August, and the Estonian nobility and the city of Reval (Tallinn) on 10 October. Russia left the local institutions in place and confirmed the traditional privileges of the German nobles and burghers as was established in Privilegium Sigismundi Augusti, especially with respect to the Protestant faith. The land reform of the so-called reduction which had been introduced by the Swedish king Charles XI, and transformed many serfs to subjects of the Crown, was reversed.
