After the Battle of San Marcial, waged on 31 August 1813 and which was one of the last battles fought on Spanish soil during the Peninsular War, the coalition forces under Arthur Wellesley, Marquess of Wellington, managed to pass the Pyrenees and gain a foothold on French territory.
