In the greater frame of the War for Spanish Succession, in 1706, the Anglo-Dutch Allies won several Victories over the French Bourbons: the French were comprehensively defeated at Ramillies by an Allied army under Marlborough, which then occupied much of the Spanish Netherlands in under two weeks; the assault on Barcelona was repulsed, while an Allied force was allowed from Portugal to enter Madrid and Zaragoza; and further successes overseas.
The coat of arms on the back shows the shields with the Latin names of the conquered cities: Brussels, Mechelen, Lier, Antwerp, Veurne, Aalst, Aath, Audenarde, Bruges, Ghent, Damme, Louvain.
