Mary's death from smallpox in 1694 at the age of 32 left William as sole ruler until his death in 1702, when he was succeeded by Mary's sister, Anne.

After the body had laid in state at Whitehall until March, it was removed to Westminster Abbey, where it was interred in the chapel of Henry VII. with unusual splendour, in the presence of both Houses of Parliament. Archbishop Tenison preached the funeral sermon.
