The alliance between England, France, and the United Provinces (Dutch Republic) in 1609 was part of the broader diplomatic and military context of the early 17th century, particularly related to the Twelve Years' Truce (1609 - 1621) in the Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648). This truce temporarily halted hostilities between Spain and the Dutch Republic, but the alliance of England, France, and the United Provinces was aimed at countering Spanish Habsburg power in Europe.
