With the death of Karim Khan Zand, Vakil-e Ra'aya of Iran (1705-1779, ruling since 1751), the founder of the Zand dynasty, on 12 Safar 1193 AH (1 March 1779), this dynasty came to an end. This event led to a civil war, at the end of which Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar (1742-1797, ruling since 1789), head of the Qajar tribe, ascended the throne of Persia in 1789.
