Tremissis 608-610.
Obv. DN ANASTA - SIVS PP AVG Draped, cuirassed bust with diadem to r.
Rev. VICTORI FOCAS AVS Cross. OИOB below.
Sear -. MIBE -. DOC -. Hahn & Mettlich, Revolt of the Heraclii V6, p. 204 and pl. 38.
1.44 g. Extremely rare. Good very fine.
Purchased from Baldwin's London, 25. 8. 1981. Ex Simon Bendall Collection.
The coin was struck from an obverse die of Anastasius and a reverse die of Phocas. Apparently the mint needed to produce tremissi and had no dies with the Heraclii. An old obverse die of Anastasius was used. The reverse seems not to have been of importance and still carried the name of Phocas. Similar coins are edited with an obverse die of Mauritius Tiberius and a reverse of Phocas (Sear 721. MIB 7).
