Details

The Badge of Distinction of the Order of Saint Anne (generally called 'Medal of Saint Anne') was instituted as a long service decoration for non-commissioned officers and men by Emperor Paul I Petrovich (1754–1801) on November 12, 1797, and incorporated into the order in 1798. During the reign of Emperor Alexander I Pavlovich (1777–1825) until 1807 it was to be conferred also for valour. Since 1829 also foreigners could receive the medal, but unnumbered. By August 19, 1844, Emperor Alexander II Nicholajevich (1818–1881) introduced the Badge for Non-Christians. On July 11, 1864, a statute amendment allowed to confer the medal to civilians and introduced a bow on the ribbon for a second citation. With the end of monarchy in Russia in February 1917 the badge ceased to exist.
