Details

Griqua Town was founded in 1812 by two missionaries from the London Missionary Society. Originally the town was named Klaarwater but the name was changed in 1813. The population consisted of a mixture of Boorish settlers and African indigenous tribes and was considered coloured. From 1871 to 1880 Griquatown was capitol of the British colony Griqualand that was incorporated into the Cape Colony in 1880. The coins were brought to Griqua Town in 1820 by the Rev. Campbell. At that time Griqua Town was practically deserted. They were not considered as money by the local population, but rather served as a monetary experiment by the London Missionary Society.
