The buildings of the Imperial Institute, South Kensington, London,
were designed by T.E. Cullcutt and built between 1887- 1893. The Queen was laying the foundation stone on 4 July 1887. The institute was founded to represent the arts, manufactures and commerce of the colonies and India. It was established as a memorial of the Queen's jubilee and proposed by the Prince of Wales in a letter to the Lord Mayor of London on 13 September 1886. The building was opened in May 1893 and this medal was probably struck at that time.

From the Family collection of H.R.H. The Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester (1900-1974), auction Christie's, December 2019, lot 11.

The Golden Jubilee of Queen Victoria was celebrated on 20 and 21 June 1887 to mark the 50th anniversary of Queen Victoria's accession on 20 June 1837. Instead Victoria celebrated the completion with a banquet to which fifty European kings and princes were invited.

133 examples of this medal were issued in gold to members of the Royal family and their personal guests who were involved in the Jubilee celebrations on 21 June 1887. It would seem reasonable to speculate that Prince Henry inherited the medal from his mother, Queen Mary, who, as Princess Mary of Teck, attended the celebrations in 1887 with her parents the Duke and Duchess of Teck and her three brothers, the Princes Adolphus, Francis and Alexander.

The Melbourne Centennial Exhibition in 1888 was organised to celebrate a century of European settlement in Australia. The Exhibition Building, constructed in 1880 for the Melbourne International Exhibition, was extended and reused. The Centennial Exhibition focused on Australia itself, and emphasised music and painting that attracted many visitors. However, the Exhibition was not recognised by the Bureau of International Expositions as a "world's fair".

It is believed that the edge inscription refers to Ganz Works (formerly Ganz and Partner Iron Mill and Machine Factory) that operated between 1845 and 1949 in Budapest, Hungary. It was named after Ábrahám Ganz, the founder and manager of the company.

It is believed that the edge inscription refers to the Rottweil powder factory which was an important company in Rottweil am Neckar, primarily producing cartridges for hunting and war purposes. The powder was also used in mining. It emerged from a 15th century powder mill when it was taken over by Max Duttenhofer in 1863.

The Royal Institute of Public Health was the merger of a several societies: The Metropolitan Association of Medical Officers of Health was an English society of metropolitan Medical Officer for Health, established on 3 April 1856. In 1869, "Metropolitan" was dropped from the title, and in 1873, it became the Society of Medical Officers of Health. The founder, Sir Henry Harben (24 August 1823 - 2 December 1911), was a British pioneer of industrial life assurance. Between 1889 and 1897, he gave large sums to assist the company in their various schemes of technical education and social philanthropy. These benefactions included an endowment for technical lectures and a gold medal in connection with the Institute of Public Health.

This medal was awarded to Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov (15 May 1845 - 15 July 1916), also spelled Élie Metchnikoff, who was a zoologist from the Russian Empire of Moldavian noble ancestry best known for his research in immunology (study of immune systems) and thanatology (study of death). He and Paul Ehrlich were jointly awarded the 1908 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine "in recognition of their work on immunity".
