The engagement followed an Anglo-Dutch attempt to capture the Spanish port of Cádiz in September in an effort to secure a naval base in the Iberian Peninsula. From this station, the Anglo-Dutch Allies had hoped to conduct operations in the western Mediterranean Sea, particularly against the French at Toulon.

The War of the Spanish Succession was a European great power conflict fought between 1701 and 1714. The immediate cause was the death of the childless Habsburg Charles II of Spain in November 1700, which led to a struggle for control of the Spanish Empire between supporters of the French Bourbons and the Austrian Habsburgs.

During 1702, the Grand Alliance repelled an assault on Nijmegen, captured Kaiserswerth, a strong town on the eastern side of the Dutch Republic, and took Venlo, Roermond, Stevensweert and Liège along the Meuse.

In the greater frame of the War of the Spanish Succession, the Anglo-Dutch Allies thwarted the Franco-Bavarian plan in 1704 to march on Vienna, while the Austrian resources were absorbed by Rákóczi's War of Independence in Hungary. Allied victory at Blenheim on 13 August forced Bavaria out of the war and the Treaty of Ilbersheim placed it under Austrian rule. Furthermore, the British-Dutch capture of Gibraltar was a significant blow to Bourbon prestige.

This medal is placed by van Loon and others amongst those which commemorate the Queen's accession, but, comparing the decoration of her person with that on other medals of about 1707 and 1708, there can be little doubt but that they were all struck about the same period.

The Acts of Union refer to two acts of Parliament, one by the Parliament of Scotland in March 1707, followed shortly thereafter by an equivalent act of the Parliament of England. They put into effect the International Treaty of Union agreed on 22 July 1706, which politically joined the Kingdom of England and Kingdom of Scotland into a single "political state", the Kingdom of Great Britain, with Queen Anne as sovereign of both Kingdoms. The English and Scots acts of ratification took effect on 1 May 1707, creating the new kingdom, with its parliament based in the Palace of Westminster.

This medal is placed by Van Loon and others amongst those which commemorate the Queen's accession, but, comparing the decoration of her person with that on other medals of about 1707 and 1708, there can be little doubt but that they were all struck about the same period.
