Details
After a rebellion against Austrian rule had broken out in Hungary in April 1848 and a republic had been proclaimed, the new Austrian Emperor, Francis Joseph I (1830-1916) saw himself forced to ask the Russian Emperor Nicolas I (1796-1855) for assistance and for the aid from Russian troops stationed in Poland. On August 13, 1849, near Világos in Western Transylvania, the Hungarian troops surrendered to the Russians. The medal was created by Emperor Nicholas I with Ukase of January 22, 1850, and conferred upon all members of the Russian army who had taken part in the suppression of the Hungarian rebellion.
