The Battle of Turnhout took place on 24 January 1597 during the Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648) between the Dutch Republic and Spain. It was a key victory for the Dutch and English forces, led by Maurice of Nassau, against the Spanish troops commanded by Count Jean de Rie of Varax.
It was the first major field battle where Dutch cavalry dominated the Spanish, showcasing Maurice’s superior military tactics and led to the Spanish losing control of key towns in Brabant, helping pave the way for future Dutch victories.
This medal was issued by order of the States of Overijssel in commemoration of their deliverance from the Spaniards.
