Beschreibung

Qing Dynasty. Bronze medal 1902, 65.09 g. On the suppression of the Boxer Rebellion. Dies by J. Chevt, produced by the Japanese jeweller Tenshodo. The crossed, enamelled flags of the seven governments that made up the provisional military government in Tientsin ca. 1900-02: the German Empire, the United States of America, the French Republic, the United Kingdom, the Italian Empire, the Japanese Empire and the Russian Empire; all tied together with the banner bearing the inscription PAX LABOR (Peace and Labour). French legend. Rv. Chinese inscription between oak and laurel branch. 52.4 mm. L&M 994. Sehr selten / Very rare. Fast FDC / About Mint State. Im Originaletui / In original box.

This medal was struck in bronze, silver and gold. It is thought that the gold issues were only presented to foreign dignitaries of the provisional government, meaning that these bronze examples were presented to either a local or lower official or possibly someone who was present during the siege.

The Boxer Rebellion was a pro-nationalist movement in China in 1898-1901 that was supported by Empress Dowager Cixi and declared war on foreigners in China. An alliance of eight nations brought 20,000 soldiers to China, defeated the imperial army and took Beijing, thus ending the uprising.
