Scientific Merit Award [Nishan-i-Ilmi]. 1st-class badge, breast decoration type, French manufacturing, 800/000 silver gilt and enamels, on the bowl’s loop French warranty mark for 800/000 silver since 1838 (boar’s head), with green ribbon. BWK3 71.

(~€ 185/USD 220)
It seems that the decoration is basing on a badge that was instituted in 1852 by Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896, reigned since 1848) as a reward for artistic and scientific merit for those who had achieved success in their studies at the recently founded Polytechnic College of Teheran. According to Younessi (in YOU p. 357) the three-class (1st to 3rd class with an annexed two-class - silver and bronze -medal) decoration was instituted by Item 16 of Rule 12 of the High Council of Education By-Laws, dated March 11, 1922, in the reign of Ahmad Shah Qajar (1898-1930, reigned from 1909 until 1925). The first class exists as breast badge with red or green breast ribbon, but also as neck decoration. The 1st-class award was also given to some foreign artists and scientist for services rendered to the Empire. Unfortunately, there is no evidence for the different colors of the ribbons. It seems to have been conferred until 1950. By law 315/7 dated September 3, 1950, approved by the Prime Minister Haj Ali Razmara (1901-1951, Prime Minister since 1950) and his Ministerial Cabinet in the 8th session of the Parlamentary Deputies on August 30, 1950, the award was replaced by a new system of awards for merit in arts, culture and education.

The two-class (1st and 2nd class) dynastic order restricted to women was established in February 1873 by Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896, reigned since 1848) just before his first visit to various European states. „Aftab“ is the Persian word for Sun, correctly applied for its attributes of warmth and light. The 1st class, restricted to female sovereigns or consorts of reigning rulers, consists of a diamond studded sash badge, to be worn with a sash ribbon and a diamond studded breast star. The similar 2nd class, restricted to princesses and ladies of high rank, is consisting also of a sash badge, but in enamels with diamonds, worn at a sash ribbon, and a breast star similar to the 17-ray sash badge, with pendant diamonds from the two horizontal lower arms. There is no evidence if this 2nd class was ever conferred. In 1939 the order received the new name Nishan-i-Khorschid [Order of the Sun], thus using the Persian word „khorschid“ for sun in its astronomical sense. In occasion of the coronation of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-1980, reigned from 1841 until 1979) and his third wife, the Shabanu Farah Diba (born 1938) on October 26, 1967, the order was transformed into the two-class (1st and 2nd class) Order of the Light of the Arians [Nishan-i-Aryamehr].

The originally two-class (1st and 2nd class) order for civil and military merit was instituted in AH 1322 (AD 1913) Ahmad Shah Qajar (1898-1930, reigned from 1909 until 1925) on occasion of his coronation. The design of its insignia followed in major parts the French National Order of the Legion of Honour. By decree dated April 10, 1925, of Hazrat-i-Ashraf [Prime Minister] Reza Pahlavi (1878-1944, reigned as Shahanshah from 1925 until 1941) the order was confirmed. In 1926 the order received three further classes (3rd to 5th class), so that it completely followed its French example. In 1938/1939 the order was reorganized once more: The collar of the order, until then restricted to the Shah and the Crown Prince, was now instituted as a special superior class. The order, ranking after the Order of Pahlawi, but before the Order of Homayoun, was conferred in all classes until the overthrow of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-1980, reigned from 1841 until 1979) in 1979 during the Islamic Revolution.

The two-class (1st and 2nd class) dynastical order was instituted by Reza Shah Pahlavi (1878-1944, reigned from 1925 until 1941) in 1932. This highest order of the empire was named after the reigning Pahlawi dynasty. The 1st class, consisting of collar with badge, sash badge with sash and breast star, was limited to the male members of the immediate Imperial family, reigning monarchs and foreign heads of state. The 2nd class consisting of sash badge with sash and breast star (without collar and collar badge) was awarded to other male members of the Iranian Imperial Family and to crown princes of foreign nations. With the abdication of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi (1919-1980, reigned from 1941 until 1979) in 1979 the order ceeded to exist in Iran, but is, as a dynastical order, still conferred by the Head of the Pahlawi dynasty, Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi (born 1960).
