Thomas Fairfax, 3rd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (17 January 1612 - 12 November 1671) was an English politician, military officer and peer who fought in the English Civil War. An adept and talented commander, Fairfax led the Parliamentarians to several victories, including at the crucial Battle of Naseby, effectively becoming military ruler of England, though he was eventually eclipsed by his subordinate Oliver Cromwell, who was more politically adept and radical in his actions against Charles I of England.

This medal is always cast and chased, and in general with ring for suspension. It is a military reward bestowed by order of the Parliament and the City of London.

Charles I. 1625-1649

Charles I. 1625-1649. Silver Medal n. d. (1648), 7.83 g. Release of Charles I. / Call to Unanimity. By N. Briot. Bust, laureate and draped. CAROLVS . I . D : G . ANGL . SCOT . FR . ET . HIB REX . Rv. Three crowns united by a cord. VNITÆ . INVICTÆ. Plain edge. 28.5 mm. Eimer 154. MI i 336/180. Sehr schön / Very Fine. Kratzer / Scratches.

Following his defeat in the First English Civil War, in May 1646 Charles I surrendered to the Scots Covenanters, rather than Parliament. By doing so, he hoped to exploit divisions between English and Scottish Presbyterians, and English Independents. This medal was designed and struck at a time when there were efforts to free him and unite the realm once again under his rule.

The obverse of this piece was engraved as early as the year 1643, as it occurs upon pieces bearing that date and preserved at least until the Restoration, when it was used again, having escaped the seizure of the Mint property by the Parliamentarians. The object of these pieces was probably to exhort those who demanded the release of the King and had taken up arms for that purpose to be united if they wished to obtain success for their cause.

Searching elsewhere for a bride, Charles sent a close friend to Paris in 1624 who, a Francophile and a godson of Henry IV of France, strongly favoured a marriage with Henrietta Maria, the terms of which were negotiated by James Hay, 1st Earl of Carlisle.
Henrietta Maria was aged fifteen at the time of her marriage, which was not unusual for royal princesses of the period.

John Lilburne (c. 1614 - 29 August 1657), also known as Freeborn John, was an English political Leveller before, during and after the English Civil Wars 1642 - 1650. He coined the term "freeborn rights", defining them as rights with which every human being is born, as opposed to rights bestowed by government or human law. In his early life he was a Puritan, though towards the end of his life he became a Quaker. His works have been cited in opinions by the United States Supreme Court.

He was tried for high treason against the Cromwell administration in 1649 and was aquitted the same year.

This medal is in very low relief and of tolerable workmanship, but not equal to the generality of the medals by Thomas Simon, to whom it has been attributed.

Commonwealth, 1649-1660. Gold Medal 1650, 26.56 g. Battle of Dunbar, Military Award Medal. By T. Simon. Restrike of the 19th century. Bust of Cromwell armoured and draped. A battle scene in the distance. THE LORD OF HOSTS . WORD . AT DVNBAR . SEPTEM : Y. 3. 1650. Rv. Speaker seated facing, in an assembled parliament. Plain edge. 29.2 x 34.9 mm. Eimer 181a3. MI i 391/13 note. Selten / Rare. Vorzüglich / Extremely Fine. Geprägt mit leicht rostigen Stempeln, Henkelspur / Struck with lightly rusty dies, mount mark.

The Battle of Dunbar, fought on 3 September 1650, was a decisive engagement during the Third English Civil War (1649 - 1651). It pitted the forces of the English Commonwealth, led by Oliver Cromwell, against the Scottish Covenanters, who had allied with Charles II in an attempt to restore the Stuart monarchy. The battle is remembered for Cromwell's brilliant tactics, the overwhelming victory of the New Model Army, and its significant impact on the course of British history.

The defeat of the Scottish Covenanters undermined their alliance with Charles II, though the conflict continued until the Battle of Worcester in 1651, where Cromwell decisively defeated Charles II's forces.

This piece was beautifully executed and was issued as a military reward for those present at the battle of Dunbar, 3 September 1650. The design of the medal was suggested by Cromwell himself in a letter dated "Edinburgh, 4 Feb. 1650", and addressed to the Hon. Committee for the Army. Thomas Simon was specially ordered by the Parliament to proceed to Scotland to take the effigies, portrait or statue of the Lord General to be placed on the medal.
