Empire of Persia, 1935-1979 Commemorative Medal

Commemorative Medal. Silver medal (Silver) On the Occasion of the Coronation as Shahansha of Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831-1896, reigning since 1848) in Esterabad in 1264 AH (1848 AD). With 1301 AH (1883/1884 AD). Not intended to be worn. BWK3 30. Very rare. NGC AU58.

From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 94.
Bought from Sotheby's, London, 1983.

Finest certified by NGC.

Incorrectly attributed to year 1298 AH by NGC. The correct year is 1301 AH.

When Mohammad Shah Qajar (1808-1848, ruling since 1834) died, the whole country was in turmoil, and the only part of Persia without fighting was the region around the city of Esterabad (today Gorgan), which was of the highest political and religious importance for the Qajar dynasty.
Therefore, the young Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1832-1896, ruling since 1848) moved from Tehran to Esterabad, where he was crowned Shahansha on 14 Shavwal 1264 AH (13 September 1848 AD). 35 years later, this commemorative medal of the coronation was issued in silver and bronze.

According to Younessi (in YOU p. 221), the three-class (1st to 3rd class) Sepah Order for Military Merit with its accompanying medal in two classes (in gold and in silver) was "instituted" on 12 May 1924, probably by Rheza Khan Pahlawi, Prime Minister of Persia (1878-1944, in office from 1923 to 1925, reigning as Reza Shah Pahlawi from 1925 to 1941). The silver medal features two different types of portraits, the first type showing the head facing half-right and the second type showing the head facing far right. With the overthrow of the monarchy in the 1979 Iranian Revolution, this medal disappeared like all other imperial orders of chivalry, decorations and medals.

Medal for Military Bravery and Exemplary Service in the Battle. Tala-grade gold medal (Gold) 29.09 g. With suspension loop and ribbon ring. Without ribbon. BWK3 49 var. Very rare. NGC MS66. Cabinet piece. Matte finish.

From the Kian collection, auction SINCONA 49, October 2018, lot 307.
From the Farhang-Mehr collection, Los Angeles, 1980.

The three grade (Tala [gold grade], Motala [gilt grade] an Noghreh [silver grade]) Medal for Military Bravery and Exemplary Service in the Battle according to Younessi (Younessi, Dr. O. James: Orders, Decorations, and Medals of the Empire of Iran - The Pahlavi Era. College Station 2016.) has come "into life" probably in the middle of the 1920ies. So, it seems to be the successor of the Medal for Valour of the Qajar Dynasty, which has been abolished by Reza Shah Pahlavi (1878-1944, reigning from 1925 to 1941), shortly after his accession to the throne. The Medals are existing with slightly deferring positions of the Shah's head. It seems, that these medals have been conferred until the early 1950ies. The first grade [Tala] was worn with a green ribbon, the second grade [Motala] with a ribbon half red and half green and the third grade [Noghreh] with a full red ribbon. They continued to exist, but they discontinued to be awarded until the end of the Empire, they disappeared like all the other imperial orders of chivalry, decorations and medals.
