From the auction Künker 57/58, Osnabrück, June 2000, lot 2546.

In the War of the Austrian Succession, Franco-British peace negotiations began at Breda in August 1746, but were deliberately delayed by the Duke of Newcastle, who controlled British foreign policy. The death of Philip V of Spain in July 1746 seemed an opportunity to break the Bourbon alliance, while Newcastle hoped the Orangist revolution would revitalise the Dutch war effort, and allow the Allies to recover the Austrian Netherlands. Both assumptions proved incorrect and paved the way for the Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle 1748.

The obverse of this medal refers to the unanimity of the Provinces of Holland, and the reverse to the alliance which at the time existed between that country, England, and Germany.

George II. 1727-1760

George II. 1727-1760. Silver Medal 1748, 28.95 g. Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle concluded. Unsigned. Piety, standing at a lighted altar decorated with a caduceus and two cornucopias, implores Peace, who descends upon a cloud, bearing a cornucopia, an olive branch, and scales; on the left lies the Lion of the United Provinces with sword, arrows, and a spear surmounted by the cap of Liberty, and the Bible with inscription: RELIGIO. E SVPERIS ASTRÆA REDVX BONA SÆCVLA REDDENS. In exergue: PAX AQVISGRANI SANCITA ANNO LIB . IVBILÆO MDCCXLVIII. Rv. The eight shields of England, France, Austria, Spain, the United Provinces, Sardinia, Genoa, and Modena, forming a circle round a blazing heart pierced with eight arrows; the whole enclosed within a wreath of lilies and branches of orange and olive, amidst which appear a trident and a rudder and over all a naval crown. REDVNIVNTVR. Plain edge. 43.5 mm. Eimer -. MI ii 644/341. van Loon Suppl. 268. Saunders/Vanhoudt 268. Vorzüglich / Extremely Fine. Feine Patina / Nicely toned.

The 1748 Treaty of Aix-la-Chapelle, sometimes called the Treaty of Aachen, ended the War of the Austrian Succession, following a congress assembled on 24 April 1748 at the Free Imperial City of Aachen. The treaty largely failed to resolve the issues that caused the war, while most of the signatories were unhappy with the terms. Maria Theresia resented Austria's exclusion from the talks, and blamed Britain for forcing her to accept concessions, while British politicians felt they had received little benefit for the financial subsidies paid to her. These issues, combined with other factors, led to the strategic realignment known as the Diplomatic Revolution, and the outbreak of the Seven Years' War in 1756.

The eight shields are those of the countries which were parties to the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle. The heart and arrows are symbolical of their amicable reunion. The lilies and orange branches represent France and the States, the parties most interested, and the naval emblems England and Holland, whose successes at sea had principally contributed to the establishment of the Peace which was concluded one hundred years after the Peace of Westphalia.

Louisburg was captured from the French on 26 July 1758. Generals Amherst and Wolfe commanded the land forces and Admiral Boscawen the fleet. The time chosen for the representation on this medal is when an attack was made upon the two remaining ships of the French squadron, which were in the harbour, one was towed away, the other, being aground, was necessarily destroyed. The perfect harmony which prevailed between the military and naval commanders is alluded to in the legend on the obverse. The siege of Louisbourg ended French colonial dominance in Atlantic Canada and led to the subsequent British campaign to capture Quebec in 1759 and the remainder of New France the following year.

George (later George III) concurrently Duke and Prince-elector of Hanover in the Holy Roman Empire before becoming King of Hanover on 12 October 1814. He was a monarch of the House of Hanover, who, unlike his two predecessors, was born in Great Britain, spoke English as his first language, and never visited Hanover.

The reverse testifies to the joy of the nation on the occasion, and expresses a hope that the young Prince would be a future strength and support to the country. The design may have been suggested by the 67th Psalm, "O let the nations rejoice and be glad" and "Then shall the earth brine: forth her increase".

The Treaty of Hubertusburg was signed on 15 February 1763 at Hubertusburg Castle by Prussia, Austria and Saxony to end the Third Silesian War. Together with the Treaty of Paris, signed five days earlier, it marked the end of the Seven Years' War. The treaty ended the continental conflict with no significant changes in pre-war borders. Austria and Saxony renounced all claims to the Silesian territories ceded to Prussia in the 1742 Treaty of Berlin and the 1745 Treaty of Dresden. Prussia clearly stood among the ranks of the European great powers, while the treaty enhanced the rivalry with Austria.

Concurrently, William I, Elector of Hesse (3 June 1743 - 27 February 1821) who was the eldest surviving son of Frederick II, Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel (or Hesse-Cassel) and Princess Mary of Great Britain, the daughter of George II, married Princess Wilhelmina Caroline of Denmark and Norway (1747 - 1820).

Prince Frederick, Duke of York and Albany (16 August 1763 - 5 January 1827) was the second son of George III, King of the United Kingdom and Hanover, and his consort Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. A soldier by profession, from 1764 to 1803 he was Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück in the Holy Roman Empire. From the death of his father in 1820 until his own death in 1827, he was the heir presumptive to his elder brother, George IV, in both the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and the Kingdom of Hanover.

On 27 February 1764, when Prince Frederick was six months old, he became Prince-Bishop of Osnabrück upon the death of Clemens August of Bavaria. (The Peace of Westphalia stipulated that the city of Osnabrück would alternate between Catholic and Protestant rulers, with the Protestant bishops to be elected from the cadets of the House of Brunswick-Luneburg.)
