George II (30 October 1683 - 25 October 1760) was King of Great Britain and Ireland, Duke of Brunswick-Luneburg (Hanover) and a prince-elector of the Holy Roman Empire from 11 June 1727 until his death in 1760. He and his wife Caroline as king and queen took place at Westminster Abbey, London, on 11 October 1727. George Frederic Handel was commissioned to write four new anthems for the coronation.
This is the official coronation medal. The Queen is represented between the chief objects of her affection. She had evinced her firm attachment to the Protestant Religion in refusing the hand of Charles, son of the Emperor Leopold I, when the prospects were fair of his succeeding to the kingdom of Spain and to the Empire.
