In the greater frame of the War of the Spanish Succession, the Anglo-Dutch Allies thwarted the Franco-Bavarian plan in 1704 to march on Vienna, while the Austrian resources were absorbed by Rákóczi's War of Independence in Hungary. Allied victory at Blenheim on 13 August forced Bavaria out of the war and the Treaty of Ilbersheim placed it under Austrian rule. Furthermore, the British-Dutch capture of Gibraltar was a significant blow to Bourbon prestige.

This medal was struck in Nuremberg.
