The peace between England and Spain in 1604 was formalized through the Treaty of London, signed on 18 August 1604 and ratified on 19 August 1604. This treaty ended the Anglo-Spanish War (1585 - 1604), a conflict that had lasted nearly 20 years and had seen major naval battles, the Spanish Armadas, and English support for Dutch rebels.
The treaty ended nearly a century of Anglo-Spanish rivalry that had begun under Henry VIII. England remained Protestant, while Spain stayed Catholic, but open warfare between them stopped. The peace lasted until 1625, when England and Spain went to war again under Charles I.
This is the only medal on which James is styled King of England and Scotland in the same manner as on his coins previous to 20 October 1604.
