Fort Stanwix mitten in der Stadt Rome, N.Y. wurde ursprünglich vom britischen General John Stanwix erbaut. Im Amerikanischen Unabhängigkeitskrieg wurde es 1777 von den amerikanischen Truppen gegen belagernde Briten verteidigt, und dabei wurde eine Flagge aus blauen, roten und weissen Streifen gehisst. Diese Fahne gilt als Vorlage für die berühmte Stars & Stripes-Flagge der USA/Fort Stanwix, in the middle of the town of Rome, N.Y., was built by the British General John Stanwix. In the Revolutionary War, 1777, it was defended by the American troops against the British. In these days a flag with blue, red, and white stripes was hoisted. This flag is regarded as a forerunner of the famouse Stars & Stripes flag of the USA.
