Description

Silver medal 1936. XI. Summer-Olympic Games in Berlin for the vault jump. Athletes raise a winner on their arms. Rev. Enthroned Goddess of Victory with palm frond and laurel wreath. 73.02 g. Gadoury/Vescovi 1. Very rare. Extremely fine-uncirculated.

Details

This medal was awarded to the so far most successful Swiss artistic gymnast Eugen Mack (21.9.1907-29.10.1978). In all he was awarded nine Olympic medals:
In the IX. Summer Olympiad in Amsterdam 1928 he won three medals: gold for the vault jump, gold for the artistic gymnastics all-around team and bronze on the horizontal bar.
At the XI. Summer Olympiad in Berlin 1936 he won four silver medals: all-around individual, parallel bars, all-around team and vault jump (this medal), as well as a bronze medal in floor exercise.
At the XIV. Summer Olympiad in London 1948 he brought a silver medal home as team chief. At the Gymnast-World Championships 1934 in Budapest, he was the most successful athlete with five gold and two silver medals.
At the Gymnast-World Championships of 1938 in Prague he became world champion in the vault, second in floor exercise and third in multidiscipline.
With the team he also gained the silver medal.
In 1999 Eugen Mack was admitted to the International Gymnastics Hall of Fame posthumously.
