Mary I (18 February 1516 - 17 November 1558), also known as Mary Tudor, and as "Bloody Mary" by her Protestant opponents, was Queen of England and Ireland from July 1553, and, as the wife of King Philip II, Queen of Spain from January 1556 until her death in 1558. She made vigorous attempts to reverse the English Reformation, which had begun during the reign of her father, King Henry VIII.

Philip II (21 May 1527 - 13 September 1598), sometimes known in Spain as Philip the Prudent, was King of Spain from 1556, King of Portugal from 1580, and King of Naples and Sicily from 1554 until his death in 1598. He was also jure uxoris King of England and Ireland from his marriage to Queen Mary I in 1554 until her death in 1558. Furthermore, he was Duke of Milan from 1540. From 1555 onwards, he was Lord of the Seventeen Provinces of the Netherlands.

Jacopo da Trezzo of Milan was often employed by Philip II, but there is no reason to believe that da Trezzo has ever visited England.

From the auction Laurens Schulman 27, Bussum, April 2002, lot 995.

England, under Queen Elizabeth I, provided significant support to the Protestant rebels in the United Provinces (modern-day Netherlands) during their war against Spanish Habsburg rule. This was part of the Eighty Years’ War (1568 - 1648), in which the Dutch sought independence from Catholic Spain, led by King Philip II.

By 1587, England’s intervention had produced mixed results as the leadership of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and Commander of the English force in the Netherlands was ineffective and he struggled to control both his English troops and Dutch allies.

Van Loon supposes this medal to have been struck by some over-zealous reformers and partisans of Leicester, who offered the government to Elizabeth and throws a mystery over the termination of the legend as implying more than the suppliants dare express. Now in size, style, taste and workmanship, as well as mint mark, it corresponds with other medals struck at this period by order of the States. It can then scarcely be considered as the production of a party cabal, but a fair expression of the sentiments of the Provinces.

From the auction Spink USA 9800, New York, December 2001, lot 2.

The Spanish Armada was a fleet sent by catholic King Philip II of Spain to invade England, overthrow protestant Queen Elizabeth I and avenge the execution of Mary, Queen of Scots, in 1587. The attack ended in disaster for Spain due to a combination of English naval tactics, bad weather, and logistical failures.

The victory boosted English morale and established England as a major naval power on one hand and marked a decline in Spanish dominance and strengthened Protestant England on the other. However, the war between England and Spain continued, leading to the English Counter-Armada in 1589.

This medal, struck in Holland the year after the defeat of the Spanish Armada, alludes probably to the Queen's solemn procession in a triumphal car to St. Paul's, to return public thanks.

The Alliance of England, France, and the United Provinces in 1596 (Triple Alliance of 1596) was a significant diplomatic and military agreement during the Anglo-Spanish War (1585 - 1604) and the Eighty Years' War (1568 - 1648). This alliance was formed to counter the growing threat of Spain under Philip II, who was aggressively expanding his influence in Europe.

The alliance demonstrated England’s increasing role in European politics, helped secure France’s independence from Spanish domination and strengthened the Dutch Revolt, ensuring that the United Provinces would ultimately gain full independence in 1648.

Purchased from S & B, Great Missenden, January 1997, lot M1.

The relief of distress primarily refers to the passing of the Elizabethan Poor Relief Law (1601), a landmark act designed to address poverty and social welfare in England. This law formalized a system of poor relief, which had been developing throughout the Tudor period, as economic hardship, population growth, and local crises increased the number of poor people in need of assistance.

It created the first nationwide, legally enforced system of poor relief in England, reduced vagrancy but was often harsh on those deemed "undeserving" and became the foundation of England’s welfare system, remaining largely unchanged until the Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834.

This piece has been called a small medal, a counter, and sometimes a pattern for a copper coin, as there is a similiar piece with a similar bust and monogram of the Queen, but with the inscription THE . PLEDGE . OF . A . PENNY . 1601.

Anne was anointed and consecrated with prayers alluding to Esther, the Wise Virgins, and other Biblical heroines. It was the first coronation to be conducted in English instead of Latin. Because of the 1603 London plague, a planned ceremonial Royal Entry to London was deferred until 15 March 1604.

This medalet was struck for distribution at this event, it was reportedly the first one issued in England for that purpose.

This is generally considered the Coronation medal of the Queen, but it was perhaps not struck before 1604, for she is only styled Queen, and James did not abandon his title of Emperor until after the first Session of his first Parliament, nor did he assume the title of King of Great Britain, at least upon his coins, before 20 October 1604.

The peace between England and Spain in 1604 was formalized through the Treaty of London, signed on 18 August 1604 and ratified on 19 August 1604. This treaty ended the Anglo-Spanish War (1585 - 1604), a conflict that had lasted nearly 20 years and had seen major naval battles, the Spanish Armadas, and English support for Dutch rebels.
The treaty ended nearly a century of Anglo-Spanish rivalry that had begun under Henry VIII. England remained Protestant, while Spain stayed Catholic, but open warfare between them stopped. The peace lasted until 1625, when England and Spain went to war again under Charles I.

This is the only medal on which James is styled King of England and Scotland in the same manner as on his coins previous to 20 October 1604.

Prince Maurice, although at heart an Arminian, had placed himself at the head of the Gomarists, as that party supported the power of the Stadtholder. This medal may have been struck by the Prince as a special compliment to James I. who had written to the States-General strongly advocating a national synod to consider the opinions of the two parties and also on account of the important part which the English delegates had taken in the meetings of the Assembly. Cornelius Wyntjes, whose initials are on the reverse, was "overseer," or Master of the Mint of Dort.
